Following on from its successful recent performances of Handel’s oratorios Saul and Samson, the Queensland Choir this year turns to one of Handel’s lesser known masterpieces – Belshazzar. This musically rich and dramatically riveting oratorio tells the Old Testament story of the fall of Babylon, whose king, Belshazzar, commits sacrilege against the God of the Jews.
It includes some of the greatest of all of Handel’s writing for the chorus, which in this work portrays three separate groups – the Babylonians, the Jews and the Persian army – and as well as some of his most beautiful arias and dramatic recitatives.
